On the UPS side, it is the SHIPPER that has to follow up with UPS for damaged/lost items. When you get a mangled box, contact the shipper. The insurance is in their name. You have no right to make a claim.
If you are the shipper and didn't insure the shipment, that's your fault and you just need to suck it up and make it right with your customer. Chalk it up as the cost of doing business.
