Talk about beating a dead horse! The DOT or the local cops don't care what color the cans are. They don't even care that, for some reason, the spouts are made from used soda bottles. If you get into an accident and someone gets burned, the insurance companies and their lawyers will care. Your house and its shingle roof will have a new owner. Nothing will probably ever happen. If you're willing to take that chance, go for it! It seems, to me, that approved cans would be cheap insurance. You can probably find some at a yard sale or on Craiglist, if you don't want to pay for new ones.
