You are not going to get a ticket. I can't imagine anyone really cares what color a 5 gallon can is and any enforcement officer who has time to fiddle with that BS just doesn't have enough to do, or he/she is a raw rookie out to save the world,
I think you got flack over the color because there are a number of folks here who are just plain anxious to tell others they are wrong about whatever the topic is.
I was surprised no one piped up to say that your insurance would be invalid if you had an accident with the wrong color of can on board. The insurance police are among the worst as far as being annoying.
