It may be trying to go into two gears at once, possibly due to broken shift rail poppet/detent springs. Take off the shifter housing on the top of the transmission and check the small springs (about 3/8 or 1/2 inch I think) that put pressure on a small steel ball that engages the detent in the shift rail. These springs rust, corrode and break, allowing the shift forks to move when they should not. Cheap and easy to replace. That top shifter housing holds pressure on the springs/balls. I have had to get the spring pieces out with a magnet and small pick. Don't drop the balls into the main housing!
You should be able to feel the detents when you move the shifter from one gear to the other.
