A plug can have carbon fouling that will create an electrically conductive path from the center electrode down the outside of the insulator and to the shell. This fouling prevents sparking across the electrode gap to the ground and thus fails to ignite the fuel. The extreme gap caused by the pulling of the wire, causes the coil vltage to go way up (maybe 25 to 30K volts) this increased voltage flashes across the spark gap due to its intensity. Thus the cylinder fires. Jim
