Those move a lot of air. I have a dust sucker( for want of a better name) that I made with one. I rigged it up to pull air through four furnace filters in series. Placed close to the table saw it keeps dust down very well. I made a squirrel cage blower from scratch from Dave Gingery's book with a 1/3 hp motor and rigged it to pull sawdust from the table saw and with 20 feet of plastic 4" pipe it removes sawdust and chips and exhaust them outdoors.
If I wanted one for welding I would use a furnace blower. You have to cover part of the inlet if you don't have enough back pressure. They are designed to operate with back pressure and without they will over speed and pull enough amps to burn the motor up.
