Like I say the only reference to that I've seen is the claim that Ford made in the Wayne narrated documentary. I did find 2 guys who were there who said they heard he was on the island but that they didn't go and see him. I never said he wasn't there but I'm having a hard time finding anything that actually states that he was there. Another question about that is he was still considered a grade B actor while the fighting on Guadalcanal was going on so what would have been the draw? He didn't really start to gain in fame until around 43.

I know what Ford did in WWII.

I also knew a WWII vet that hated Bob Hope. Hope was supposed to come in and do a show on an island in the south Pacific but after a Japanese counter attack canceled but another group came in to replace him. The person I got that story from was my father, WWII, US Army Infantry. Silver Star, Bronze Star with V device and Purple Heart. The Heart cost him a leg between the knee and ankle but he stayed on active duty retiring in 71 with 31 years.

Sorry, but a guy who swept the floors in a factory making war materials is more of a hero to me than some actor who made IMO cheesy movies.

As far as his age goes some actors who did join were older than Wayne. Jimmy Stewart was 33 when he enlisted. I don't remember his name but one actor was 40 when he joined. What I did find doing some research was that he did in fact apply for at least one deferment claiming that he would have to pay his studio back for breaking his contract when no studio required that of any other actor who joined up. That he was in fact determined to be 1F and that his studio applied for and was granted at 2F (fit to serve but of more value to the war effort where he was) for him in 43. Interesting note here. Some people from the movie industry including actors and others had their salaries CONTINUE while they served.

Now I'm not knocking him even though it may seem like I am. I'm just talking about what he did to deserve a day. All I can find is that he was an actor and actors don't in general rate very high with me.

If someone were to present to me one IMO good reason that he deserves a day then by all means I'd be in favor of it even if I wasn't impressed with him as an actor.

Rick

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Godfrey, Illinois Country Days - by Cindy Ladage. Except for last fourth of July's Old Gold show in Springfield, Illinois, I don't remember when it was so hot. Nevertheless, the heat didn't keep vendors and visitors alike from enjoying the third annual Country Day's Event. Jane Elliott said the event was originally a one man show. "Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this ... [Read Article]
