In general, no one worries about or checks cam endplay on thjose engines or shims the timing cover to compensate, and all is well.
The 9N's and 2N's and early 8N's used a spring thrust washer between the front of the cam and the timing cover. (Key # 15 in the drawing.)
It seems many got lost during OH's over the years and the engines still ran with no ill effects.
Typically, camshafts are ground with a slight taper to the lobes and the action of the valvetrain bearing down on the slightly tapered lobes keeps the cam rearward, plus the "cut" of the helical timing gears is such that the cam gear is forced rearward under load.
