Although the 502, 552, and, 702 were called "suburban tractors" on the manual cover, the 1960 model 400 and model 550 were legitimatly listed as the 400 Suburban and 550 Suburban. The following year these were considered the 401 and 551 and did not really go by the name "Suburban" according to any manuals or documentation. Most people, however, consider any of the 1960-1961 mid engine tractors "Suburbans". I use the term "mid engined" because the engine was mounted in the middle of the tractor, between the operators knees. They are a comfy ride in the winter, but a real roaster in the middle of the summer! By the way, the engine was in this location because the initial version of these tractors that was introduced in 1955 was based on Elmer Pond's two wheeled walk behind tractor. They simply extended this design forward and made a riding tractor out of it. On the 1961 model 701 and on models following the engine was in the traditional front location. As another note, this first riding model used a variable speed pully/friction reverse/belt/chain drive. In 1958 the 3 speed Uni-Drive transmission was introduced. If you have any other Wheel Horse or Pond questions, feel free to send them my way.
