I will probably get flamed for this, but that's how it was "back in the day", even before parts from "The Land of Almost Right".
Inertial starter drives always were temperamental pieces of dog excrement.
Those starter drives were a big reason why little "Mom and Pop" automotive electrical shops in every little town could exist and were busy.
Once positive engagement or "shifted" drives came along there was a LOT less trouble with starters and a LOT less cuss words needed.
I have an IH "A" that has always had starter drive trouble, even after we replaced the ring gear some years ago.
I have gathered up some parts from other applications that SHOULD let me wind up with a solenoid-shifted starter that's gonna engage every time and get it's job done.
SOMEDAY when all paying customer jobs are caught up, I'm gonna get that project done!
