It would be interesting to see what the numbers on rural post offices are like now compared to 20 years ago.
In the cities the courier companies have taken a chunk of the business.
I am in a rural area and our local post office is quite busy.
Like you have said the hours have been cut back, ours closes at noon.
With online purchases I spend more on postage now.
If I can pick up the phone, place an order with a credit card and have parts in my hands by 10:30 the next morning versus driving 2 hours each way to get them myself I will gladly pay $20-$40 for postage.
In the last month I figure I have spent over $300 in postage between things I have ordered in or shipped out, I paid it happily as the time and fuel it saved me adds up fast.
20 years ago I would not have spent 10% of that on postage.
How many others like myself are out there I don't know but I would imagine the numbers along with the post office business are increasing.
