Update. I got out the angle grinder and wire brush and cleaned up the deck as best I could. As expected, she's in bad shape, but strangely only in the back of the deck in an area about 8 inches long.
I got the neighbor to help me TIG weld the biggest holes shut, then I fiberglassed the rest of the area to fill the remaining holes.
Man, this is one BUTT ugly welding job I did. In fact, calling it Butt Ugly is an insult to the ugly butts out there everywhere. Oh well, it got-r-done.
We'll see how long that lasts. Won't be forever, but I'll maybe get a year out of it. l hate it when good equipment dies when the engine is still good. I have half a mind to pull the engine off this mower and keep it, but what I'd do with a V shaft B&S I have no idea.
