It's making me crazy. Three times this week I have walked into the big machine shed to find a large coffee can worth of nuts all over the ground. Here's what I know:
I can't figure out where they are coming from because they are assorted sizes and all of my stuff is sorted.
They are mostly old rusty square nuts not anything shiny that a bird may want.
There are literally hundreds - most of them at the side of the bench but they sprinkle out the big doors. There were even a couple dozen on top of the urea in the fertilizer buggy parked nearby. There was one on the roof of the tractor hooked to the buggy.
There aren't any new nests anywhere in the workbench cubbies. There also aren't any empty containers.
Most of today's were quite large - 3/4 up to one inch. Way too big for a bird to pick up.
There were so many I first thought one of the dogs had gotten ahold of a box and dumped it out. They were flung everywhere. I'm 6'4" and the nut and bolt bins/boxes are above my head. The dogs didn't pull that off.
I had trouble in the shop with birds carrying off thumb tacks but those were shiny and light. I'm at a loss on this one. I thought maybe a pack rat, but there isn't a nest anywhere. The dogs would have it pointed out even if it were on the roof of the shed. One more time and I am setting up a game camera. I have been racking my brain all day today and I can't figure it out. Someone here has to know. It obviously has to be native to NE KS.
