There it mates with the PTO shaft if you have one. The PTO turns in the same direction and speed as the engine. Your drive shaft is definitely broken and in an unusual spot. When you put it back together make sure the retainer on the front of the transmission is installed facing the correct way. It will go either way. Also clean out the oil gutters and drip holes over the front and rear bearings.
