Phil, Before you get too far into this, you want to locate the problem. You can replace a lot of parts before making a fix. Remove the 2 side portholes and raise the lift with a load on it. Using a light look inside to see if oil is dripping out of the end of the lift cylinder. If so the piston/cylinder/rings may have to be replaced. To do so, remove the top cover by removing the bolts and lifting off. The cylinder is held by 4 bolts, remove and disassemble for inspection. Look for damage and inspect the rear of the cylinder. They are known to crack around the end and bleed oil. If you don't see oil flowing from the cylinder, then the leak is somewhere else because the fluid is trapped after a check valve and then released. You may need to inspect the valves. You can do so by pulling out the PTO shaft and dropping the pump unit or unscrewing the valves while the pump is in place but awkward to do. NOTE: If it leaks down the pump is not a fault. It's either the check valve, lowering valve or a leak in the passage going to the cylinder. The other posting referred to get an IT repair manual. It's a cheap $20 investment. You can get one from any farm supply store such as TSC or Quality Farm and Fleet. Good luck! Ken McWilliams Dayton, Ohio ************************************************** : IF my blade is lifted and I shut off the engine, it does not take : long for the lift to drop. THis suggests to me that : I need to overhaul the hydraulic system. Is this a : tough job on a Ford 8N. Does the rear end have to : be dismantled or can it be done from the top? THe lift : works fine, it just does not hold. I am a novice : at working on 8N's so any suggestions would be : appreciated!!!!
