A few places around me have many panels up, enough to easily produce more than consumed. And then there's some places that have enough to consume amount produced. It also depends on your local power company and if they have net metering as well as how much they pay, when you are producing more than consumed. Start up cost factor is as little as a few hundred to many thousands. Installation on a metal roof is doable but from what little I know I wouldn't want it as metal roofs can attract stray lighting strikes wiping out your panels. Myself I have about $500 invested for enough to off-set a never off TV and a couple never off CFL lights.
