Father in law grew up in a place with bad ground water so they and everyone had rainwater collection with a huge cistern in the basement. It was built in the 1940s and 12 off them drank it until they moved out. They dumped a jug of bleach in once or twice a year.
I stayed at the house after it had been empty a few years, the fill spout was unhooked but the tank was still half full. We fixed the little piston pump so we could use the toilet. Not thinking I brushed my teeth with the tap water. Next day we were down in the basement curious about the water level when I spotted the dead rats floating in the water. Never got sick luckily but it was a stomach churning sight.
