The gasket has blown. There's a passage from the pump up through the body of the tractor, where it matches up to the lift cover, there's a gasket there, as well.
The original gaskets contained asbestos, making them TOUGH.
The politically-correct gaskets sold today are not as tough.
When you replace it, clean surfaces WELL, and don't use sealant, especially silicon, as that makes the gasket slippery and even more prone to blow.
If you are planning to do this, have a service manual at hand and/or ask for details of the job at the "N"-specific Board linked below. The job involves draining the oil, pulling the PTO shaft, and then the pump.
When going back together, the control lever hanging down from the lift mechanism has be engage the control valve in the pump.
