I can count on one hand the times any of my three tractors has spent the night out in the weather since I've owned them (once broken down, once when my wife was using the barn for a garage sale, maybe 2-3 days each time), but I seriously doubt if any of them spent a night inside before I owned them. My friends that actually farm tell me that's a difference between a farmer and a hobby/acreage guy like me -- they need their barns for other stuff.
I don't begrudge a guy doing the best he can with what he has available.
I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned, and start keeping a stock of the filters on hand. I pay a couple of bucks each for the wix-made filters I get from Sturdevant's, and I try to keep a couple on hand for each vehicle. I'd put a used filter back on before I'd use a Fram (and I've never put a dirty filter back on).
