Dad had a 1938 Chevy truck, larger than the one that you have. It had a 2-speed rear axle that we had to shift with a lever over on the passenger side - but it worked when you shifted; it was more positive than the vacuum shifts that came later.
Dad traded it in on a new 1949 KB5 International truck.
