I raise 50 or 60 Cornish Cross meat birds every year for the freezer and keep 2 to 3 dozen mixed layers year around. Mostly black or red sexlink, maybe a few barred rocks for color.
At the moment I have a very mixed flock as two neighbors decided not to keep chickens any more and gave me all their hens. In addition to the breeds mentioned above, I have a pair of Silver Spangled Hamburgs, two Americunas, a breeding pair of Silkie bantams and several Golden Comets. I'm getting a dozen eggs a day plus and have all winter which is highly unusual. The Spring Rush will start any day now and I'll be up to my belt in eggs for a few weeks.
What I can't sell I usually donate to the local food pantry until the laying binge tapers off. By early summer, I have enough customers to take all they produce.
