Ford had issues with the heads and intake manifold gaskets on their 3.8 - cast iron engine with aluminum heads. The factory head gaskets weren't good enough to handle the differences in the two metals and failed under heat and failed at low mileage (sometime as low as 30K). With leaking/seeping head gaskets a little coolant in the oil goes a long ways towards forming sludge. Usually with quality aftermarket head gaskets the problem was solved.
