The vp44 on the 24 valves is sensitive to low supply pressure. Cheap rebuilders don't replace the circuit board, which is prone to failure as well. Extended cranking on start-up is a good indicator of pending circuit board failure.
There are guys who have swapped the entire timing cover and components to run a ve44 in place of the common rail to get rid of the emissions components. They say it works quite well.
