Roger, As I understand your question. The hole is on the side of the block just above the oil pan, below the water jacket and is covered by the starter. This area may be stressed if it is on a tractor that doesn't have a frame and uses the block to hold the tractor together. Make sure there are no cracks going toward the bottom of the block which would continue to propagate toward the edge and eventually break out to the edge. With a hole this large, a much rigidity has been removed from the block and with use can break. If it's in a non-critical area that doesn't affect the alignment of the bearing journals but just contributes to the strength and rigidity of the block you may want to clean up the opening to some geometric shape like a square or rectangle with a burr mill on a die grinder, and braze in a piece of near equal thickness to the block to put back the strength and rigidity. Then, use the JB epoxy/steel plate as a patch to make the area oil tight. Another thing which you may want to consider is replacing the block. Why not? Is it so rare or expensive that it's not replacable? I would only repair the block if there was no other reasonable alternative. Ken McWilliams Dayton, Ohio
