If you want to see potential, get a digital volt meter, set it on a low AC setting. Hold one lead with your fingers, start touching various metal objects and watch the meter. Try going from one object to another. You'll be surprised what's floating around, even holding a lead in each hand will show voltage!
Before we rewired the shop, I ran an air line between the buildings. When I went to hang it from the steel perlings, I noticed a spark. Also if I watched closely, the lights would brighten slightly. I never tried touching across the 2, but I suspect it would deliver quite a jolt! Obviously a weak neutral, but the "potential" for a shock was there.
