The pump, which is also the fan motor, has a brushless, permanent magnet motor on it, and sintered bronze bushings on the shaft to keep the rotor spinning between the magnets. Those bushings wear out until the rotor can get too close to the magnets and they touch. If you pull the pump apart, you will find the bushings to be worn off center. I have yet to find a good sources for the bushings in original spec, as they are flanged sintered bronze.
