If you are still hearing a noise from the starter, I'd say putting 1 brush in it was not nearly enough. Is there another place you can take it? It sounds to me like the starter needs a rebuild. Did you verify that it has nothing to do with a dead battery or poor or corroded connections? Put jumper cables directly on the starter. Put one (+) on the main battery post on the solenoid, and hold the (-) to the bare metal on the case of the starter and have someone hit the key. IF it cranks over normally, you got a corroded wire or dead battery. If it still drags and hums, then you got a bad starter.
