I live in North Central Iowa, on the way to work every morning I drive by hundreds of wind towers. It is my understanding that the business model (or KW balance) is you invest a lot of KWs making and installing the wind tower and get a fraction of the energy back over the course of the life. Because of the liability they have a finite life, at a predetermined time they will be taken down even if they're still working because their is a serious worry about them coming apart and making a new scrap yard in a 1/2 mile radius around the tower. So you can invest $1,000,000 in wind power and over the course of the towers life recover $900,000 or less, thus the need for the subsidy.
