buickanddeere, I thought I had a simple question, how many acres? It was just a brain tart question. I didn't expect to get all sort of replys from government subsidies, to roof tops. I sure didn't know solar panels were toxic.
What if I had asked how many acres of solar panels would it take to replace just one power plant? I live near a river. All up and down the river are coal fired plants. A coal trail goes through town to one plant, 100 cars of coal, 50 ton each. That's a lot of coal, lot of energy.
So, if you only have usable sun light 1/3 of the day, you will need a very large FLUX capacitor form back to the future to store it. No one mentioned to get max solar gain, you would need to have collectors track the sun. Isn't output of solar cells a function of the angle the sun strikes the panel?
4 counties around me are having 10 acre solar farms under construction. I think power companies are going to be required to have a small % of their electricity produced by either solar or wind.
At current time, Indianapolis airport has a large solar farm near exit to airport.
So it looks to me, practical or not, solar farms will be a part of the landscape soon. Still like to know how many acres?

Some of my fondest memories of these visits are those of learning to drive a tractor at the helm of Uncle Cecils 1948 Farmall Super A. Uncle Cecil was the second owner of this wonderful little tractor, but it was almost as though he had adopted an infant. The original owner was a man from Minnesota who bought her from a local dea
