Oxygen is heavier than carbon. CO2 has two oxygen atoms for each carbon atom, so if you were burning just carbon and oxygen, you'd get 44 lb of CO2 for every 12 lb of carbon, or 3.6 lb CO2 per pound of carbon. In reality for gasoline, octane is C8H18, so you'd have 352 lb of CO2 and 162 lb of H20 for every 114 lb of octane. Reducing that, it's 3.1 lb of CO2 and 1.4 lb water per pound of gasoline.
