Yes the slip rings(27) are on the shaft(#26) and run in housing (#29). These will leak allowing high pressure oil out against the lip seal. If the housing and shaft are not PERFECT they will leak. This is what usually gets damaged if someone tries to pull start the tractor. They sometimes will pull start if you pull them fast and long enough to build pressure in the hydraulics. The trouble is you usually ruin the Hi-Lo clutch pack while doing this.
The one dealership I worked at sold 28 NEW JD 2840s over the years. They where the BIG tractor on many of the smaller dairy farms in the 1970-80s. So they got worked hard. They kept us busy in the shop when they got some age on them. I hate working one a JD 2840. Especially the hydraulic system. If some thing is ran to where it spread metal in to rest of the system you may as well take everything in the system apart and clean/rebuilt it right then,. If you do not then you WILL over the next year or so.
The best thing I found for them was to take the engine and put it into a JD 3020 frame. You had a GREAT tractor then. That six cylinder motor was smooth and ran well.
