I would say that the slip rings are allowing high pressure oil out against the seal. It is not made to hold the high pressure. This is a weakness on these tractors if it has ever been towed while not running it wears the tube and housing to where it will not seal correctly. It is an expensive repair just in parts along without the considerable labor involved. This is a BIG weakness in this tractor.
Many consider the JD 2840 to be the next worst tractor JD made behind the JD 2010. Great engine but weak clutch and Hi-Lo issues. Kind of a run Forrest run type of tractor if bought used.
