This is an original document dated Nov 29, 1847 whereby John A. King and his wife Mary who lived in Jamaica, Queens agreed to rent out 123 acres in Schoharie County, NY to a man named Jesse M. Cornell. It was about this time that many of these poor renting farmers rose up against the very rich and prominent men who owned gigantic tracts of land here in upstate New York.
These were called the "Anti-Rent Wars" and eventually the renters banded together and bought the land. They bought 15,940 acres from John King for a whopping sum (at the time) of $25,000.
John A. King became governor of NY State in 1857-58.
