Big thing for something with your eyes is infection. You don't want your cornea's getting infected. Any unpleasant feeling like that is your body saying "something aint right in here".
Doesn't mean it's the end of the world, and probably something that'll self correct, but you always want to put the odds in your favor when you can. Especially with a valuable asset like your eyes!
