It's probably the tuner unit which is buried in the dash. The poster who said that there's a couple pieces to the radio is correct.
I had a similar setup in my '93 Buick. After replacing it with a refurbished unit for over $100, I got a Pioneer from Walmart, a "plug" adapter (from Best Buy), and a dash mounting/adapter. I have less than $200 in the new one. I'll guess that Best Buy would be able to put one in for you for around that price or a little more.
I read somewhere that the internals of the radio units where manufactured with a new "glue/solder" technology which was obviously not perfected.
