My father had a Lincoln 225 stick welder that he used for farm repairs in the early '60s, but he was self-taught and not a very good welder. I still think of his welds as resembling goose chit. I didn't learn much from him other than to be brave or cheap enough to try your own repairs. When I was in my early 20s I had the chance to take some tech-school welding courses, where I learned oxy-acetylene and stick (in the days before MIG and TIG were so common). One of my first projects was a cherry picker (engine hoist) that I still use today (although I've upgraded to a heavier jack). Today I have equipment to do OA, AC stick, DC stick and argon-gas MIG, but I still turn to my Lincoln buzz box as my favorite. I've somehow managed to build things up to and including tandem-axle car trailers without any failures. (Lucky so far?)
