most of the gun shops in illinois will do the foid card for you. they take the photo and send in the application. i think they are good for 6 or 10 years. you do need one to posess a gun or buy ammo in illinois if you are an illinois resident. not really a big deal, if you are mentally disturbed or have a felony background you are denied. the benefit that i see is the gangbangers that get caught with a gun without a foid card get arrested. it does give law enforcement a little bit of leverage against the criminal element. good or bad, i dont know, but so far i have never had a problem. got mine in the early '70s i think.
