While the Starrett indicator and base is of top quality and accuracy you can pickup an import set from Enco for probably less than $50 that will work for most uses. And when you drop it or otherwise shock it and possibly damage it you won't feel so bad. Again I am not knocking the U.S. Starrett. I have some very nice U.S. made indicators but for general use I often use a cheap import for just these reasons. When real accuracy is needed out comes the good stuff. I feel that if you don't have an indicator and don't need or want to buy one the feeler gauge and straight edge will work fine for this application as long as you are sure you are not lifting the straight edge with the feeler gauge.
