The only jd I ever owned was a 730d with a pony start and it started fine. I could start the pony and let it run for a bit to get things warm then start the engine. In the case line any diesel before the 70 series is tough starting below freezing if they are good, anything worn and it get resl tough. From the 70 series on tho they will start at any temp without help if they are in good shape but will need some help as they age.
