My IH 886 and JD7800 are the best starters. You wouldn't ever have to plug them in but it's hard on them I believe. If it is going to be below 10 degrees I plug them in. The 4440 is a good starter, but the 4020 is a lost cause. Anything below 45 is a no-go. It has 24,000 hours and only one rebuild so that may be part of it. I bet half the power bill in the winter is that block heater. It's never been stellar, but she's worse in her old age.
I've never had the 886 or 7800 not start, though. I put a new ether can on the 886 and made sure it worked, but I have never in my life used the ether button on either of those tractors. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw.
