Packard did NOT "go bust!" The worst automotive merger in the entire history of the automobile industry happened in 1954 when Packard bought Studebaker. Packard had plenty of cash on hand, and were a solvent company. Studebaker was drowning in red ink. Packard acquired Studebaker because they were too heavily invested in the upscale luxury car business. They wanted to add a more "blue collar" car line to their offerings to attract younger buyers. Somewhere along the line, the big shots decided to move the manufacturing to the Studebaker product. Due to a recession in 1958, the Packard name was dropped as a car line. Studebaker-Packard corporation continued on into the 1960s when Studebaker finally ran out of Packard money and their own poor business practices caught up with them.
