In 1979 things were very tight. The GM where I worked was all over Jimmy Carter's Whip Inflation Now! and gave no raises. I had just built an addition to our house, and one thing that I had was lots of scrap wood. I cut many pieces into various sizes so that there were many of each size. I then painted them, so that each block had different colors. All it cost me was for a couple more half pints of paint and some time. My daughter was very happy with them and she and her younger brother played with them for years after. They were the same type of thing that my brothers and sister and I happened to get when I was little.
