Get 'er fixed up and take it easy on it until it is perfect, I know it won't be easy in that line of work. When I had my non dominant index finger taken off at the middle knuckle in a sickle bar when I was 8 or so. Got it sewed back on, it does bend, but mostly stays straight now. I mostly use the middle finger in place of the index with my thumb to hold nails and start nuts and bolts. It seems when I was doing heavy equipment repair like you, I would injure something and reinjure it numerous times before it finally healed right. The job had to get done.
