HI Rich It depends what fittings you use, many of the hydraulic fittings have tapered threads which go together and form a no leak seal. The problem with teflon tape is if it gets into the system it is going to cause problems with hydraulic pumps or spool valves so you can see why the company doesn't want it used. I am no expert and do not know of any sealants I think sealing high pressure would be an issue. I would talk to your local hydraulic shop they should be able to give you good advice, products and they should be the experts.
