If the engine runs wrong direction just turn it around so the radiator faces the other way. Then with an oil shield you could use roller chain for the drive link with sprockets to set speed right to throttle. The oil shield could be sort of like the oil box on the chain drive on the end of a Deere cornhead. That would keep the chain oiled and not slung all over everything.
