You will likely need to reverse the rotation. Most engines turn clockwise when viewed from the front. The PTO turns counter clockwise. You might think of using a car transmission. This won't reverse the rotation but it would allow the engine to run at idle for light loads (highest gear). For heavier loads downshift the transmission and turn up the engine RPMs. Are you planning on using the generator a lot? For backup power it would seem to me that a tractor would be the easiest thing. Your tractor will probably always start and have fresh gas in it. A dedicated engine that is only run once per year or less would just be a hassle to me.
