Wife's friend has a '93 or so Cummins Dodge, that she pulls her horse trailer with. (Or for you grammatical purists, with which she pulls her horse trailer, because we all know that a preposition is a bad thing to end a sentence with). Naturally, it picks our place to not start. She wasn't even getting a click.
I looked at the battery and it looked 1) elderly, and 2) smaller than the battery tray. And there was only one, not 2 like ours has. I took it out, and it was only 750 CCA, and was nearly 5 years old! Sent her and the missus off to my mechanic, who sells Interstate batteries, with instruction to get the proper one for the vehicle, with as many CCA's as they could pack into it. I cleaned up the cables (which are also shot- looked like the originals) as best I could, and with the new (1050 CCA) proper size battery, it roared to life. I told her to get new cables ASAP. She did comment that it had never started that quickly before.
No substitute for CCA's for starting a diesel. You gotta spin to win!
