If she's a friend of the family and it's an awkward situation, step back away from it. No harm, no foul that way. A "friend" going through a divorce that needed money cost me $6,500 for a little '89 JD 950 that I didn't need but did for a friend, then cost me about $4,000 more by the time I split it and started replacing stuff. Be careful. There's an old saying that goes something like nice guys finish...
It does say a fresh rebuild on the engine, but not how many hours on the unit. As I recall, they used a 20 HP Onan, but since it says rebuilt, I'm guessing high hours or abuse. Its an '89, so I'm thinking that $6,500 is a lot for the pictures. You see them from time to time, and they are nice little critters. To me, $6,500 is a lot. I wouldn't want to insult her AS AN OUTSIDER, but I wouldn't go over $5,000 on the high side, and that might be pushing it with my teeth gritting. As a friend of the family, I would do what you just did...ask around for her. That's my opinion.
Learn from my mistakes so that you don't repeat the cost of them for yourself.
