The people all saying how easy it is and do it yourself have to remember that not all cylinders are designed alike. I have worked on some cylinders that took heat and force applied to the wrench with a backhoe, or aluminum glands with lock clips that are seized in and the tang breaks off. Many variables, and yes plenty come apart just fine but many, especially old stuff like the original poster is asking about, often are stuck or goobered up from many years of use, neglect, abuse or just plain weather and age
