The current issue of Time magazine has an article on consumption of red meat and processed meat being a possible cause of cancers. What caught my eye was some figures on meat consumption and exports of meat. Some expert opinion would be nice.
On consumption, they list China, the European Union, the US, Brazil, and Russia. China consumes a lot of pork, more than all of the other 4 listed. The US is a distant third on the list. For beef and veal consumption, they list the US, Brazil, the EU, China, and Argentina. The US is first in consumption, with Brazil about 20% less than the US, and the EU and China close behind. Argentina is about 1/3 of the second three.
What was really interesting to me was the exporting countries. For beef exports, India was first ahead of Brazil, followed by Australia with the US a distant fourth, exporting less than 1/2 of India's total. Really? India produces that much beef?
For pork exports, The EU is the leader closely by the US. Canada exports a little less that 1/2 as much pork as the US, Brazil exports less than 1/2 as much as Canada, and China is less than 1/2 as much as Brazil.
